INAUGURAL NYC SOUNDPAINTING FESTIVAL

Soundpainting Inventor Walter Thompson Headlines Brooklyn Fest

May 9th, 10th and 11th at The Firehouse Space

Brooklyn, NY For three days and nights, Williamsburg’s Firehouse will host NYC’s inaugural Soundpainting Festival. The festival will feature performances by the country’s leading Soundpainting ensembles and intensive workshops with Soundpainting’s inventor, Walter Thompson. Soundpainting is the live-composing sign language for performers working in the medium of structured improvisation. At present the language comprises over 1200 gestures that are signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Walter Thompson headlines the festival, leading his NY-based Walter Thompson Orchestra all three nights. The festival will feature six different ensembles, led by six different Soundpainters. Each ensemble will showcase its unique application of the Soundpainting language as they sculpt the improvisations of actors, dancers and musicians. Walter Thompson will offer Soundpainting intensives on Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11 from 9:30am-4:30pm. This is a rare stateside visit by Thompson and an opportunity to study with the inventor of the language himself.

SOUNDPAINTING is the live-composing sign language for performers working in the medium of structured improvisation. At present the language comprises over 1200 gestures that are signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Soundpainting is a sculpting tool. It allows a conductor to shape group improvisations in real time. The language was created by composer Walter Thompson in New York beginning in the late 1970’s. The language is now practiced in over 34 countries and on 5 continents. Walter Thompson has been living and working in Europe for the past dozen years where he is celebrated for his unique contribution to structured improvisation and multi-disciplinary performance. "Among Fools" will be a 50-minute multidisciplinary performance for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists.  Text, movement, and visuals will be generated from anagrams of the scripture passage from Ecclesiastes: "The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools." (Ecclesiastes 9:17) Graphic scores, structured improvisation, and traditional notation will be woven together into an open-form piece, evoking the surreal mystery of Richard Foreman's theater and Anthony Braxton's music.

SOUNPAINTING WORKSHOP AT 6PM WITH ARTISTS! JOIN US!

This evening has a little something for all; Fletcher Boote and Michael Lynam Perform an excerpt from  'If an Ant Should Love You,' a multi-media performance mapping an inward journey of imperfect consonances. Elizabeth Devlin, a self-produced NYC singer-songwriter, combines soft fluttering vocals, enchanting autoharp melodies and densely packed surreal verses, painting abstract narratives with lyrics that feel more like poetry then song. Mary Joy Patchett performs 'song cycle for saxophone (version 1.2)' by Elliot Cless, an open form composition that is designed to transform over time, though retain its overall cyclicality—in the presence of the composer!  Round two will feature music by Sofia Gubaidulina and Soundpainting with all performers.

The Frank Withey Memorial Scholarship Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable, and educational purposes; more specifically, to assist artists and art/music related programs and events in their educational, professional, and programmatic development and advancement, and to raise the appreciation for the arts in our community.
In the beginning, this Foundation will endeavor to raise funds to be given in scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue their full time music education at the college and university level.
Recipients will be required to show acceptance into a college or university, with the intent to major in music. As the foundation grows, it is hoped to provide scholarships in the Fine Arts, primarily Painting and Sculpture, to high school seniors attending classes at the college and university level, with the intent to major in painting and/or sculpture.
Further growth of the Foundation, hopefully, will enable the Foundation to provide for lessons, instruments and supplies to gifted individuals of all ages in the community and to host and present events to raise funds, enabling the Foundation to supply deserving individuals the finances and/or supplies needed to further develop their talents. http://www.frankwitheyscholarshipfund.org/
