June 11th, 12th, and 13th, 2015 at The Firehouse Space

Brooklyn, NY For three days and nights, Williamsburg’s Firehouse will host NYC’s 2nd Annual Soundpainting Festival. The festival will feature performances by the country’s leading Soundpainting ensembles and intensive workshops with Soundpainting’s inventor, Walter Thompson. Soundpainting is the multi-disciplinary live-composing sign language for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. The language comprises over 1500 gestures that are signed by the Soundpainter indicating the type of material desired of the performers. Walter Thompson headlines the festival, leading his New York-based Walter Thompson Orchestra all three nights. The festival will feature six different ensembles, led by six different Soundpainters. Each ensemble will showcase its unique application of the Soundpainting language.

SOUNDPAINTING is the multi-disciplinary live-composing sign language for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. It allows the composer (aka Soundpainter) to shape the material, offered by the performers, into a composition created in the moment. The language was developed by composer Walter Thompson in New York beginning in the late 1970’s. Soundpainting is now practiced in over 35 countries and on five continents. Thompson divides his time between New York and Europe where he is celebrated for his unique contribution to single and multi-disciplinary composing. Visit Soundpainting.com for more information.

The performances by the Walter Thompson Orchestra are funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

To engage actively & technologically & artistically & publicly & privately in the inquiry of what is

gained and lost through new technologies.

How do we receive and give information?

How does technology affect us and how we feel/think/connect?

How do we engage with the information we have access to and the technology that allows us

that access?

What new languages are we learning and what languages are we losing?

Who holds the access to the new language of the intraweb? Is it truly democratized, horizontal

& free or is it controlled by established limbs of an old power structure?

Are we more or less connected by the web of social media?

How does the accessibility of information free us or limit us?

While the speed of information we receive through technology is growing exponentially, is our

capacity to match it (physically/spiritually/emotionally) growing as rapidly?

How are our minds changing to meet that speed?

These are the Big questions. Ones we are all asking. Either actively or indirectly through new

media and mediums. Come engage their asking with us.

The Chagall Performance Art Collaborative (Chagall PAC) is a community of artists committed to collaborating across the disciplines and exploring the ways we experience art. We believe art is never the same in any given moment, but rather evolving and continually being shaped by the imaginations of those who come into contact with it. We create performances that involve audience participation and expand to the newest reaches of contemporary performance art.

Chagall Performance Art Collaborative was co-founded by Diana Norma (literary artist) and Dennis Shafer (saxophonist). The pair met in Paris in 2006, and have been collaborating on a poetry-music project since, called Sounds in Bloom. When they started to collaborate with more artists from diverse disciplines, the Chagall PAC series was born. They perform in Boston, Paris, New York, and elsewhere in theaters, cultural institutes, concert halls, conservatories, salons, small gardens in Eastern Europe, art galleries, public spaces and forests.
