About Dennis Shafer

Dennis Shafer is a saxophonist, director, and live-composer based in Boston and New York City.  His playing has been reviewed as “brilliant” by The Boston Globe, and he has engagements around the world soloist, educator, and live-composer. He conducts and directs Boston University Saxophone Ensemble, Chagall Performance Art Collaborative, and Brooklyn Soundpainting Ensemble. As a commercial musician, Shafer is represented by Hank Agency and works for Honey Train Music Services.

In New York, Shafer made his recital debut in 2015 at the Firehouse Space featuring the Smellovision Project, the Brooklyn Soundpainting Ensemble, and works by David Krebs, Jeremy Jones, Jehiah Bray, Claudio Gabriele, Maurice Ravel, and Luciano Berio.

His most recent multimedia project, RendrGram, explores the merging of man and machine and the beauty of glitches and mistakes in both humans and computers. RendrGram’s debut performance was at the Judson Memorial Church in April 2015.

Shafer made his concerto debut in New York City in 2011 at Merkin Hall with Ensemble du Monde, performing Concerto Grosso by Eino Tamberg.  Since then he has performed as a guest artist and given masterclasses at the Duxbury Music Festival, New England Conservatory, The Boston Conservatory, and many notable venues in New York, including SpectrumNYC, The Sidewalk Café, ABC No Rio, DROM, and Rockwood Music Hall.

In 2009, Shafer released his debut solo album and promoted it in a world-tour with concerts in Paris, Bangkok, Lawai (Hawaii), and several US cities, including Boston, New York, San Francisco, Eugene (Oregon), and Lawrence, Kansas.

As a teaching artist, Dennis is invited frequently to give workshops, masterclasses, and concerts at many places across the US, including the Boston Conservatory, the University of the Pacific (San Francisco), the University of Wisconsin (Whitewater), Salem State University and the University of Kansas, among others.  Dennis’ students have won many awards and performed in notable venues, with performances in Inman Square, Harvard Square, and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Dennis Shafer holds diplomas with honors from The Boston Conservatory, Boulogne Conservatory (Paris, France), Longy School of Music, and Brooklyn College (Performance and Interactive Media Arts).  He has studied saxophone and Soundpainting with Kenneth Radnofsky, Jean-Michel Goury, Vincent Gnojek, Etienne Rolin, and Walter Thompson.
